The Team Rocket base had been quiet for nearly two weeks. It wasn't that there weren't any fights - there always were - it was that a certain duo weren't together. Kiyotaka Ishimaru and Mondo Oowada had been given different assignments, leaving Ishimaru in the base and Mondo out traveling. They kept in contact every day - precisely at seven AM and ten PM - but keeping them away from one another had been the best decision the Team Rocket Executives had made in a long time.
At least, that was the way things were supposed to be. Mondo had returned early from his job and was currently striding through the hallways, dark coat whipping around his legs as he moved. He had a destination in mind and it was one he was loathe to reach. Mondo knew he had to do this though, and once he had made up his mind, there was no stopping him.
A week ago there had been an attack on the Ecruteak City Gym. The attacker had stolen all of Morty's Pokémon and had gotten away. Morty said he couldn't remember anything that had happened - that there was literally a period of time where he couldn't remember anything. Mondo recognized those symptoms and had started backtracking to Goldenrod as soon as he was certain he was right.
Ishimaru had all but sealed it, after all. He'd been far too nervous that night during their conversation. He had called on time, of course, but Ishimaru had been such a wreck that Mondo had cut their conversation short and told his brother to get some sleep. Ishimaru had said it was due to the attack, something he should have been able to predict and stop, but he didn't sound very convincing. Mondo pretended to buy it, if only because he didn't want to confront his brother about this over the phone. He needed to do it in person.
That was why he was here, standing outside their shared room, shifting uncomfortably. Part of him wanted to leave, to pretend that he hadn't figured it out, that he was just as dense as everyone seemed to think he was; but he knew he couldn't do that. Ishimaru had done something horrible, and Mondo needed to talk to him about it.
He opened the door and walked in. Ishimaru was seated at the desk, jumping as the door opened. "Kyoudai," Mondo started, forcing a smile. "Hey."
"Ah, kyoudai! I wasn't expecting you back so soon! Aren't you supposed to be surveying the Olivine area for another week?" Ishimaru's smile quickly faded. Mondo found himself rolling his eyes even before Ishimaru started chastizing him. "You shouldn't be back here! Return to your job at once, kyoudai! We can't afford to have them punish us! We need to work with these people to bring our classmates here, you know that!"
Mondo's eyes narrowed and he felt himself tensing. "Yeah, you'd know all about that, wouldn't you? You're pretty fucking good at doing what you're told, huh?"
"What do you mean?" Ishimaru looked innocent enough, but his eyes had darted down to the floor. He knew exactly what Mondo meant, and they both knew it.
"That attack on Morty. That was your doing, wasn't it?" Mondo held up a hand before Ishimaru could offer some sort of excuse or explanation. "I don't want any bullshit, kyoudai. You attacked him and stole his Pokémon. Why the fuck would you do something like that!?"
Ishimaru's shoulders slumped and he continued staring at the floor. Mondo was surprised there weren't any tears yet. "Kyoudai, I... you don't understand! I had to!"
"Don't give me that shit! You don't have to do anything! We can always--!"
"You don't understand!!" Ishimaru shouted back, drowning out Mondo's words. "Colonel Archer has taken special interest in me! Don't you understand!? If I help him out, he'll assist us in bringing the others here!"
"So you're going to do shit like this to get there? You're supposed to be the one with morals and rules and all that fucking shit! What the fuck happened to you, kyoudai?" Mondo's voice fell at the final question and for a moment he looked genuinely hurt.
That was what got the tears. Ishimaru wasn't crying quite as hard as normal, but the tears were something of a relief for Mondo. He wasn't used to Ishimaru going through such emotional stress without bursting into tears. "I-I have to help him, kyoudai. I have to bring them here! We can't leave them in that school!!"
"I know we can't! But there's gotta be another way!!"
"There isn't, kyoudai!" Ishimaru sobbed. "I've thought of everything and this is the best chance we have! Please, please believe that, even if you believe nothing else!"
Mondo took a step forward and reached out without thinking, almost touching Ishimaru's hair. He pulled back at the last minute and flinched a bit, trying to make the movement look natural as opposed to... whatever the hell it had just been. "You can't keep doing this sort of thing, kyoudai. At least let me help you." It sounded more like a question than anything else.
Ishimaru hesitated, glancing up at his brother after a moment and then away. "I... I'll think about it, okay?"
That wasn't okay, but it was the best Mondo was going to get. He nodded and finally did reach out to ruffle Ishimaru's hair. "No more tears, alright? We'll do this together, kyoudai. You don't have to suffer alone, alright? We'll find some other way that won't force you to do this shit."
"A-alright." The hall monitor hiccuped. "Th-thank you, kyoudai."
"I've got some shit to do, but I'll be back in a bit, alright?"
"Of... of course."
Ishimaru waited until Mondo had turned his back and then he glanced down under the bed, to where a set of purple paws were visible. Sayuri was under the bed, listening intently to the conversation. Please remove those memories, Sayuri. We can't have him getting involved.
The Pokémon didn't reply immediately, instead working on removing Mondo's memories of his confrontation with Ishimaru. Thank you, Ishimaru thought, I just hope he won't come to the same conclusion and come yell at me again tomorrow.
