PROPOSAL

Fandom: Fire Emblem Fates
Character(s): Xander, Felicia
Pairing(s): Felicia/Xander
Word Count: 942
Summary: Felicia may not be a good maid, but she's great at lifting his mood.
Notes: For Sable! Thank you for getting me hooked on this ship.

Tea time is always at four, and while Felicia isn’t always exactly on time (usually due to spills, sometimes ones right outside the door to his study) she does always apologize when she’s late. She’s been bringing him tea for weeks now, ever since Corrin chose not to side with her siblings and vanished. Felicia has been taking it just as hard as the rest of them, but she tries her best to be cheerful and helpful. She’s better at the former than the latter, not that Xander would ever tell her that.

After all, he appreciates the company. He doesn’t see much of Leo or Camilla and he simply doesn’t have time for Elise. It’s unfortunate, but that is the task that falls to him as the eldest. Father’s battle plans have been increasingly erratic lately and Xander has taken it on himself to make adjustments accordingly. Felicia’s company has been something of a godsend in these times; she forces him to stop working and drink a cup of tea with her. Well, that might not be entirely accurate; he was the one who insisted she stay for tea with him. She still doesn’t seem to know why, but he’s not sure he can tell her that her company is the only thing giving him some kind of solace now. It’s a bit much to admit to anyone.

“Prince Xander!” Felicia’s voice is a welcome relief from studying supply lines and Xander sets his work aside to get the door. The maid hasn’t spilled anything on the floor outside of his study today, which is certainly nice. “I made it on time for once!” She says with a bright smile. “I didn’t spill anything either! Well, except some sugar, but I promise I have enough for the tea!”

He ushers her in with a gentle smile. “Thank you for always taking time from your busy schedule for me.”

“Oh... Oh no, Prince Xander, it’s no trouble!” Felicia flushes and quickly enters the room. Xander manages to grab her shoulder before she can trip over a place where the rug doesn’t lie flat. “Th-Thanks,” She gasps.

Once the tea is on the table and Felicia’s sitting, she begins to tell him about her day without prompting. She still speaks formally when she remembers, but sometimes she treats him just like everyone else in the castle. Sometimes he’s not the crown prince and it’s a feeling he relishes. Once she’s prepared his cup of tea as usual she sits back a bit, studying the tray. “I can’t believe I actually remembered everything this time!”

“You’re getting better at this.”

“I think this is just a fluke.” She looks very happy with the praise though.

Felicia really is the most amazing woman he’s ever met and she’s worked so hard to get to where she is. She’ll never be a great maid, but she doesn’t let that deter her. The determination and stubbornness she displays is downright impressive. A woman like her would be better fit to be a commander or a queen.

She continues talking animatedly while he considers that thought. A queen. No, not just a queen. His queen. He hasn’t thought about it before, but he has been carrying the ring on him, as if he was preparing for this moment without being aware of it. It only serves as proof just how perfectly everything fits together, like the pieces of the plates Felicia’s broken in his study numerous times before.

“Felicia,” He interrupts her suddenly and she looks up. “Will you marry me?”

Her eyes widen and her mouth falls open and for a long moment she tries to work out words. He doesn’t interrupt this time, he just watches her fumble. “S-Sir... I-I mean... Lord Xander! I um... I think you’re a little mixed up, Your Highness!” She shakes her head and holds up her hands.

It’s the suddenness of it that’s throwing her, isn’t it? Xander frowns a bit before taking her hands. She doesn’t try to pull away, but she’s already trying to work out further protests. “I have always admired you, Felicia.” His voice is even, calming. She closes her mouth. “I cannot stand to think of another day without you by my side. I look forward to tea with you more than I have anything in quite some time. I enjoy your company, I long for your companionship, and you are more than good enough for me. I do not see a problem here.”

“But... But I’m not nobility! I’m a servant!” The protest is weaker, but Felicia looks away anyway. Her face is entirely pink and it looks adorable. “What would people say? I’m just a maid, Xander.”

“No.” His grip on her hands tightens and she looks back up at him. “You are not just a maid. You are Felicia, a charming and dedicated woman who works very hard to do her best, no matter what the task.”

“I’m clumsy and awkward and... oh, Prince Xander, I don’t think...”

“Let them think what they want.” He cuts her off again, firmly. “Do not let anyone else’s opinions matter. What is it your heart tells you?”

She doesn’t hesitate anymore. The uncertainty is gone, replaced with a bright, warm smile. “I want to marry you, more than anything.”

Xander raises a hand to cup her cheek and leans forward to kiss her, tea long forgotten.
