Notes: Happy birthday, Lum! ♥

The Manor of the Wicked is an impressive building. The two floors are large and filled with rooms and decorations that can really only be described as “showy”, precisely like the man who owns it. Duke has gotten used to staying in the manor most nights, but sometimes he feels the need to leave and distance himself from the decadent lifestyle Yeager leads. He could never get used to so much wealth and so much stuff.

The nights he spends in the woods are lonely and quiet and while he does like his solitude, he’s been seeking it out less and less lately. Yeager’s life is busy and nearly overwhelming, but he’s found he doesn’t wish to stray far from the guild leader’s side.

(Some part of him wonders if it’s through fear of losing him, but he’s not entirely sure that’s it. He just enjoys Yeager’s company. Maybe that’s all it has to be.)

Yeager’s bed is large enough for both of them to fit comfortably and as Duke sits on the edge staring out the window at the stars, he wonders when exactly he decided this was the life he wanted to lead, surrounded by people he would have once hated.

“Duke,” Yeager’s voice reaches his ears and he turns slightly to look over his shoulder. Yeager’s dressed for bed but he’s still messing with his hair a bit. It’s a sign that he’s thinking about something; it’s possible that it’s making him anxious but it’s a bit difficult to tell with how blank his expression is. “Do you remember that ring I gave to you?”

Of course he remembers. Yeager had pressed it into his hand the day they parted and he had held onto it tightly until he had finally met up with Yeager again. The guild leader had refused to take the ring back, though. Duke nods, slowly. “I do indeed remember. Why?”

“I would like it back.” Yeager says, his expression still curiously blank. “Now, if you would.”

That’s strange. Duke stares at him for a moment expecting an elaboration or for Yeager to smile and tell him that he’s only joking. When he doesn’t receive either, the man reaches to the bedside table next to him and retrieves the ring from the drawer. It’s an alexandrite ring, a rare find. He holds it out for Yeager without question.

(But why does he want it back now? Is something wrong?)

Yeager takes the ring and looks it over, turning it this way and that to catch the moonlight. He looks as though he’s seriously considering something and the silence spans for too long. Duke opens his mouth to speak, but Yeager gets there first. “I planned on making some kind of spectacle of this, you know,” The remark is casual, like Duke should know exactly what he’s talking about.

He doesn’t, of course. “Yeager?”

“But in the end I couldn’t do that to you, ja? As much as I’d enjoy something showy and over-the-top, I know that’s not your style.” He closes his hand around the ring, then walks around the bed until he’s directly in front of Duke. “So, let’s keep it small and simple!”

Yeager drops to one knee and Duke has the startling realization that he knows exactly where this is going. “Duke Pantarei, will you—”

“Yeager,” His voice sounds alarmed even to his own ears, despite all of his attempts to keep it neutral, “is this some kind of joke?”

The guild leader looks a little annoyed that he was cut off and he sighs loudly. “Of course not! Do you really think I’m that sort of man?”

Well, actually—

“I would never do such a thing to you! You mean the world to me, Duke. I couldn’t bear to hurt you! No, no, I mean every word of this.” He opens his hand, presenting the ring. “Will you marry me?”

Duke’s fairly sure this is what it feels like to have your heart stop.
